In 1994, director Roland Emmerich, producer Dean Devlin and composer David Arnold put themselves on the Hollywood map with Stargate. Their next outing together, 1996's Independence Day earned almost twice as much at the worldwide box office as the #2 film of the year and became the second-highest grossing film of all time behind Jurassic Park.
The score for Independence Day is perhaps best remembered for its rousing, patriotic bombast, however there is beauty and introspection in the quieter cues which should not be overlooked. This is such a treasure of knowledge for a music student! As a percussionist, I am floored by the variety of percussion instruments used throughout, especially the taiko drum for the bombastic triplets in the alien theme (morse code for the aliens' favorite word "DIE"). The score contains notes on all the story beats so you know exactly where you are in the film. Thanks to Chris Siddall for this sizable nugget of 1990's gold. Shipping was painless too - UK to US. As Steven Hiller said right before he nuked the mothership: "Peace!"
As a non-professional musician, I'm totally satisfied with this great book. It's well organized, you can notice that it's done with care and the passion that only film music fans can show. This book is a fantastic resource for studying the music I love while learning music as a hobby.
