Wes Craven’s low-budget (“a $ million-and-change”) 1984 film A Nightmare on Elm Street turned out to be a landmark, watershed film for the young director. The film’s original box office success may have been modest ($26 million) by contemporary standards, but it was a firm foundation, spawning a half-dozen sequels and making a bona fide pop-cultural icon of the series’ antagonist, the disfigured, knife-fingered ghoul Freddy Krueger.
Seasoning the nightmarish picture to creepy perfection is the electronic score of composer Charles Bernstein. The haunting ten-note theme he created for the film would become a musical touchstone for the entire Nightmare cycle and eventually come to be regarded as a genre classic.
Created from in collaboration with the composer, this release offers a rare opportunity to study film music in its authentic, original orchestration and arrangement. An opportunity not to be missed!
